Daily cleansing of the penis, particularly under the foreskin of an uncircumcised penis, can prevent bacterial infection. Daily washing also reduces the already low risk of penile cancer. Boys should be taught by age 3 or 4 to start to gently pull back (retract) the foreskin. The foreskin may not be fully retractable until puberty. Wash the penis, and replace the foreskin over the head of the penis after cleansing. Do not forcibly retract a child's foreskin if it is painful or difficult to do so.
